Soludo Breaks Monday Sit-at-Home Jinx as Onitsha Main Market Roars Back to Life

By Otobong Gabriel,  Abuja

After years of fear, silence, and forced closures, Onitsha Main Market finally breathed again on a Monday.

In what many residents describe as a historic turning point, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, effectively ended the long-running Monday sit-at-home culture as traders reopened their shops and business activities resumed across the commercial city.

For the first time in nearly five years, the famous market — one of the largest in West Africa — witnessed real trading instead of deserted stalls and locked gates.

Earlier in the morning, tension still hung in the air.

By 6am, several streets were empty. Vehicles were scarce. School buses ran without pupils. Many residents stayed indoors, uncertain whether attacks might occur. Large sections of the market remained under lock and key, with traders standing nearby, watching and waiting.

But by noon, confidence slowly replaced fear.

One after another, shutters rolled up.
Business returned.
Customers trickled in. Voices grew louder. Trade resumed.
Traders said they signed attendance registers and clocked in, complying with the governor’s directive to ensure full participation.

Mrs. Chinyere, a phone accessories dealer at Emeka Offor Plaza, described the moment as liberation.
“We are happy Monday trading has finally started again. Other South-east states have been working while we stayed home. Soludo made this happen,” she said.

Security presence was also heavy, with police and military patrols stationed around the market to prevent any disruption.
Then came the symbolic moment.
Around 2pm, Soludo arrived personally at the market — not just to inspect, but to shop.

Moving from stall to stall, greeting traders and even joking about bargaining like “an original Onitsha boy,” the governor’s walk-through drew cheers and applause from traders who saw it as a bold statement of confidence.

“We have ended sit-at-home in Onitsha,” Soludo declared. “For the first time in five years, the market is open for business.”
The move has drawn praise from civil society groups.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) commended both the traders and the governor for what it described as courage and collective resistance against economic paralysis.

In a statement, the group said ending the sit-at-home order would help revive the struggling South-east economy, which has suffered years of disruption, lost income, and insecurity.

However, HURIWA also raised fresh concerns about security, calling on Defence Headquarters to clarify the controversy surrounding the reported reappearance of a notorious IPOB commander earlier declared captured by the military.

The group urged authorities to provide transparent and credible information to maintain public trust.
Still, Monday’s development marked something many thought impossible — normalcy.

For traders who have watched their businesses shrink week after week, the reopening represents more than commerce.

It signals freedom.

After years of shutdown Mondays, Onitsha has finally chosen trade over terror — and business is back.

Peter Obi Criticizes Tinubu for Prioritizing Foreign Trips Amid Rising Domestic Crises

By Otobong Gabriel,  Abuja

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of focusing on foreign trips while critical issues at home worsen.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, Obi described January as “a distressing month” for Nigeria, highlighting the rapid deterioration of conditions across the country.

He pointed to rising insecurity, noting that the nation witnessed numerous killings alongside “hundreds of kidnappings and abductions,” with ransom demands running into millions of naira.

Obi also raised concerns about the plight of farmers, many of whom remain unable to return to their fields due to ongoing violence. This, he said, is exacerbating food shortages and rural poverty, putting additional strain on Nigeria’s struggling economy.

The former Anambra governor’s comments underscore growing criticism of the administration’s focus on international engagements at a time when domestic challenges demand urgent attention.

Akoko-Edo LG Chairman Impeached, Vice Chairman Sworn In

By Okola Akpakpan

The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has been impeached from office.

Following the impeachment in a letter signed by seven Councillors and Oshionogue, the Vice Chairman of the local government, Hon. Ayodele Fatimbi, was immediately sworn in as the new Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The swearing-in marks a change in the leadership of the council, as Hon. Fatimbi assumes responsibility for the administration of the local government.

However, the impeachment did not go down well with some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area including the Chairman. Local Government Service Commission, Hon Kabiru Adjoto.

The Edo North Senatorial Leader of the party, Hon Anselm Agbabi confirmed that State Working Committee (SWC) of the APC has called a stakeholders meeting for Saturday while some party leaders in the area are also calling for a separate meeting to resolve the issues.

He was impeached few hours after lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly failed to hold a peace meeting with him and the seven Councillors.

It was gathered the Chairman was removed following attempts by three of the Councillors that did not attend the meeting to suspend the seven councilors.

It was learnt that the seven Councillors rushed to Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo local government, and issued the impeachment letter.

The letter of impeachment reads, "We, the undersigned members of Akoko Edo Local Government Area Legislative Arm hereby impeach you as the acting Local Government Council Chairman with effect from today the 28th January, 2026.

"This decision is as a result of your abuse of office, high handedness, embezzlements of Council funds, Anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery and constant disobedient to constituted authorities".

Oshionogue denied any wrong doing as he said there are on going projects in each of the ten wards of the area.

APC Cannot Prevent Politicians From Defecting – Felix Morka

By Otobong Gabriel, Abuja

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has said the ruling party has no intention of stopping politicians who choose to join its ranks.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Morka described the recent wave of defections to the APC as a sign of growing confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He made the remarks amid concerns over the increasing number of governors defecting to the ruling party, including the recent defection of the Kano State governor.

According to Morka, the governors joining the APC are doing so because they believe in what he called a “resurging Nigeria” under Tinubu’s leadership.

“What we are seeing are governors who have made a conscious decision to align themselves with this resurging Nigeria that President Tinubu is clearly positioning the country to become,” he said.

The APC spokesperson stressed that the party remains open to new members and would not act as a barrier to politicians seeking to defect.
“We are happy and excited when people join our party. We cannot act as gatekeepers or try to filter out those who want to come into our fold.

Doing so would be undemocratic,” Morka stated.
Addressing fears that the growing defections could lead to a one-party state, Morka dismissed such concerns, noting that Nigeria has experienced similar political dominance in the past without weakening its democracy.

He recalled a period when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled a comparable number of states across the country.

“At a point in our history, the PDP governed Nigeria with nearly the same number of governors. I was actively involved in politics at the time, and there was no serious talk of Nigeria becoming a one-party state,” he said.

Morka added that the current situation should not be interpreted as a threat to democratic pluralism, insisting that politicians joining the APC is not synonymous with the emergence of a one-party system

Candido Advocates Transparent Leadership to Reposition APC

By Blessing Bature

Former Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido, has called for discipline, transparency, and fairness within the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that internal corruption and impunity have previously cost the party electoral victories.

He cited disputes arising from party primaries and candidate selection processes, particularly in AMAC and Bwari Area Councils, as clear examples of internal mismanagement that have weakened the party’s fortunes.

Candido urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take a firm stand in repositioning the APC ahead of future elections by ensuring credible leadership at all levels and restoring discipline within the party structure.

According to him, only a transparent and fair internal process would strengthen party unity and rebuild confidence among members and supporters.

On land grabbing in the FCT, Candido noted that while the current administration is making efforts to address the problem, the crisis is largely a result of failures by successive administrations.

He explained that the proliferation of fake land allocation documents and the activities of fraudulent estate developers have fueled disputes between indigenous communities and alleged landowners.

He called for a comprehensive review of land allocation processes and stricter enforcement of regulations to protect indigenous landowners and curb illegal land acquisitions, stressing that all issues must be addressed decisively to ensure justice for all parties involved.

On the recent increase in taxes and levies by the FCT Administration, Candido defended the policy, describing taxation as a necessary tool for development and service delivery under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He stressed that no nation grows without citizens contributing through taxes.

“If taxes are friendly and affordable, citizens should pay them and demand accountability. You cannot expect good roads, electricity, water, and other services without paying taxes,” he said, adding that government must be held accountable where taxes are collected without corresponding services.

He cited the removal of fuel subsidy as a bold but necessary policy that has increased revenue for states and local governments.

According to him, this is the first time subnational governments are receiving significantly higher allocations, and citizens should now demand improved services from their state and local leaders.

While acknowledging the hardship faced by Nigerians, Candido urged patience, saying reforms take time to yield results.

He called on government agencies to listen to citizens’ complaints and introduce measures to cushion the harsh effects of economic policies.

“As a member of the ruling party and also a Nigerian citizen, I believe the government must always listen to the cries of the people and find ways to ease the burden of its policies,” he said.

Progressive Frontiers Launches to Deepen Civic Participation, Strengthen Democracy

By Blessing Otobong-Gabriel

A new citizens-driven political support group, Progressive Frontiers (PF), has officially launched in Abuja with a mission to strengthen democratic governance and deepen civic participation across Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch ceremony held in Abuja, the National Convener, Oluwayemisi Oshaloto, described the group as “a movement of purpose” committed to promoting accountability, patriotism, and nation-building.

She said the initiative would serve as a bridge between government and citizens by amplifying the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration while fostering civic engagement and public enlightenment.
“We are here to build a Nigeria where citizens do not just observe governance but actively shape it,” Oshaloto said.

The convener added that Progressive Frontiers would engage communities through education, advocacy, and grassroots programs designed to promote transparency and inclusiveness.

The event drew civil society leaders, youth representatives, and members of the media who hailed the initiative as a timely step toward strengthening democratic values and citizen participation in governance.

Meanwhile, North Central Coordinator Femi Stephen Owoaiyi highlighted the program’s aim to bridge the gap between the people and the government.

“There are many things happening in this country that people are aware of, but they have no access to decision-makers.

"Through our program, we aim to bring the people — especially the poor — closer to power, to unite and pursue goals that will benefit the nation, he said."

" Our initiative will provide a platform for citizens to express their aspirations and be heard at the highest levels.”

He encourage Nigerians to be patient and support the group’s objectives, describing Progressive Frontiers as a bridge between the grassroots and the corridors of power.

Ondo Guber: Coalition Rates Chances Of APC Aspirants

By Uche Onyeali

Coalition of supporters of the All Progressives Congress, under of APC Support Groups, has rated the chances of the aspirants for the party ticket in the November 21, 2024, Ondo State governorship election.

In an opinion poll conducted by the APC support group, Wale Akinterinwa scored 89 percent to emerge favourite to clinch the ticket of the ruling party.

The survey result signed by the national coordinator of the coalition, Dr. Muhammed Joda, and the national secretary, Comrade Kingsley Ebhoma, Olusola Oke is tipped to come second in the race with 65 percent while Senator Jimoh Ibrahim comes third with 35 percent.

According to the survey, the incumbent governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa has 25 percent chances to remain in office while Paul Akinyelure trails far behind with five percent, as the result indicated that he and some others lack significant support, "with participants deeming them unfit to lead the state at present."

Speaking on the outcome of the poll, the coalition noted that "as support groups of the party, we are duty-bound to also ensure peace, unity and progress in the party at all levels, while promoting the activities/good governance. Hence our embarking on an independent opinion poll exercise, survey and assessment of the potential aspirant for the party’s ticket ahead of the party’s primary election as to avoid a repeat of the incidence that played out in Edo State where the party was almost being ridiculed for not conducting a transparent, free, fair and open all-inclusive primary elections.

It is evident that Olusola Oke, Jimoh Ibrahim, Wale Akinteriwa, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Paul Akintelure, stands tall among other aspirants for the party’s ticket.

"However, this report presents findings from a survey conducted to assess potential candidates for the APC Party Primaries in April, with a focus on their ability to sustain continuity in governance - protect the legacies of AKETI. The survey aimed to gauge public perception and support for various aspirants based on their track records, political knowledge and alignment with AKETI’s mission and vision for the state. "Utilising a total of 3,600 individuals, with 200 sample, from the Local Government Areas through random sampling of the voters’ register, this survey provides a comprehensive understanding of voters’ sentiments across diverse geographic regions within the state."

Umahi's Reckless Leadership, A Threat To Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda

Opinion...

Recent outplay of events in the federal ministry of work is a call for  great concern as steps taken by the new minister of works, Senator David Umahi left most staff of his Ministry with little doubt about the impending danger of incompetence, arrogance, and impunity that the new helmsman will bring to the enviable Ministry.

According to information obtained from sources in the Ministry revealed that the minister displayed his early signs of managerial incompetence when the Minister, rather than following laid down guidelines for the take-off of his duties, called for a meeting of top management staff and contractors of the Ministry within 24 hours after he assumed duties.
His action was totally in violation of sections of “Briefs For New Political appointees” paramount among which required him to take a brief of activities of the Ministry from the appropriate Officers.
The requirement for taking briefs was designed by the Tinubu-led administration to acquaint Political Office Holders with the basic knowledge of their respective offices with a view of avoiding embarrassment and probable stagnation of the administration’s much-valued Renewed Hope Agenda.

One other major violation of sections of the Briefs for New Political appointees is the appointment of Chief of Staff by Umahi.
Umahi’s hasty decision to call for a meeting within 24 hours after arriving at the Ministry appeared premeditated because most parts of the meeting were used by the Minister to launder his image as one of the best-performing Governors in 8 years and also tacitly threaten his audience and “their backers in high places” that he was ready to step on toes in achieving Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Sources at the meeting revealed utter shock and dismay among participants who thought the Minister was in a hurry to tell Nigerians his vision for the enviable Ministry.

Umahi also exhibited professional incompetence as an Engineer when, immediately after the meeting with the staff and contractors of the Ministry, he commenced a tour of Federal Highways without first taking briefs on the respective projects, contrary to engineering projects management procedure.
Many staff of the Ministry, contractors, and other stakeholders were at a loss as to why, despite a considerable number of files and other documents requiring his immediate attention, the Minister decided to rush to project sites.

Ironically, only a few construction activities are ongoing at most of the project sites due to the increased frequency of rainfall at this time of the year. Not surprisingly, Umahi’s decision to embark on the hurried inspection of projects boomeranged when he started making false statements and seriously exposing his professional incompetence.

Cases abound where Umahi made statements and gave directives unbecoming of an Engineer, thereby putting the enviable engineering profession in a bad light. One of such embarrassing directives was during the inspection of a section of the Enugu – Portharcourt expressway where he told the contractor handling the project to expose successive layers of the road pavement to traffic (and by implication, adverse weather conditions) for 30 days each before the provision of the surfacing layers. He had also stated at some fora that excessive traffic loading has no bearing on premature road failures, thereby ridiculing the engineering profession and granting tacit approval for the overloading of Nigerian highways.
Ironically, the Federal Government under the past Buhari administration had made some progress regarding the provision of weighbridges to curtail excessive traffic loading on the major Federal roads in the country.

Added to the needless delay in checking and understanding urgent matters on his table especially matters regarding major road projects such as the Abuja – Kaduna – Kano road, Onitsha – Enugu road, Enugu – Portharcourt road, etc., is the decision by Umahi that Federal roads will henceforth, be built using what he usually refer to as “concrete technology” as if concrete has not been in use for highway projects in this country.
Experts have confirmed that concrete technology has always been an integral part of road projects. However, they contend that there are 2 main types of road pavements…flexible and rigid. While flexible pavement is usually surfaced with bituminous surfacing materials, rigid pavement is usually surfaced with cement concrete materials.
The experts therefore concluded that Umahi may be referring to concrete paved roads instead of the somewhat bogus “concrete technology”.
The Minister has been bragging about the huge success of his past administration in Ebonyi State in concrete technology and is determined to replicate it at the Federal level given the 50-year guaranteed life span of concrete pavement against flexible pavement with a life span of between 20 and 30 years. However, not long after the much-publicized acclaimed success of Umahi’s concrete technology, some photographs of failed parts of his concrete pavement were shared on some platforms.
Other credible sources indicate that Umahi is deploying intimidation tactics and flaunting the President’s name to cow staff and contractors of the Ministry into silence and paving the way for fostering his cronies for the seamless execution of his agenda in the Ministry.

Stakeholders are at a loss as to why a professional Engineer will rush to the President to request express approval for the wholesale adoption of concrete pavement on all Federal roads without recourse to relevant Professional and Regulatory bodies such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, etc for relevant inputs given varying ground conditions and other environmental factors in different parts of the country.
International best practices also require pilot sites to monitor performance over some time. Impeccable Ministry sources also indicate that there is serious concern about imminent stagnation and probable abandonment of most of the projects because the Minister is very eager to foist his concrete technology on already existing contracts which were duly awarded by the Federal Government based on flexible pavement arrangement.
Efforts by the contractors and very senior Engineers of the Ministry who are more experienced than Umahi to make him see the reason for the likely negative legal, financial, and logistic implications on already existing contracts have been met with harsh and demeaning statements, insisting that Mr. President has approved the use of concrete technology, hence he (Umahi) cannot be bothered by any amount of blackmail from contractors and other stakeholders.

Further information from Ministry sources reveals that Umahi exhibits hypocritical tendencies in his dealings with staff. During meetings which he usually held intermittently between site inspection tours, he portrayed himself as a godly person who shows love and respect for fellow humans and always urged the staff to emulate him by doing the same.
In most of the meetings, he praises the staff, calls some of them by their names, and commends them for very good performance of their duties. However, to the surprise of many, he usually turned around much later in the same meetings to humiliate his audience through insults, unfounded allegations, and even curses.

Another worrisome issue regarding Umahi is the alleged role of a Retired Director in most of the Minister’s actions/utterances. The said Retired Director who bowed out of the Ministry early this year and was known for various irregularities while in service, appeared to have prevailed on the Minister to employ him with the sole aim of continuing his irregular acts on a higher scale under the Minister’s protection and also to unleash needless vendetta on Officers that merely frowned at his irregular activities while in service.
This is aside from trying to mislead the Minister on important policy matters mainly for selfish reasons. One such instance is the impending posting of an Officer out of the Ministry’s Headquarters for flimsy reasons.

More embarrassing and utterly strange was the situation where, before the whole world, Umahi betrayed his inner hatred for an officer when he called on the officer to listen to him while addressing the press somewhere between Warri and Kaima, along the East -West road. This is very unbecoming of a Minister of the Federal Republic.
Keen observers believe that Umahi’s actions have seriously dampened the morale and enthusiasm of very important stakeholders in the Nigerian road sector which may put the laudable goals of the Tinubu-led administration in jeopardy unless urgent steps are taken to address the anomaly.

Redemptive Mission: Potholes Tinubu Must Avoid In Appointing His Lieutenants

By Ismaila Bako

The triumph of President Bola Tinubu at the February 25, 2023 presidential election came at some costs. In the first instance, the weight of the trust Nigerians thrust on him was heavy, especially when considered against the backdrop of the precarious situation in which the country is currently enmeshed in. In Tinubu, Nigerians found a glimpse of hope.

To say the least in the mildest way, the trust was not a blind one; rather, it is based on his past antecedents in governance. He has gained positive notoriety as a recruiter-in-chief of. The thinking is that Tinubu is the lifeline on which the hope of redeeming Nigeria is hinged. Nigerians trust Tinubu's pedigree not to settle for less. Records speak for themselves that Tinubu is not a man who entertains excuses. That is why he can search till the end of the earth to pull out result-oriented, tested and trusted brains to form his cabinet. Hence, he cannot afford to disappoint.

So far, Nigerians have started applauding Tinubu for the appointments already made. Their expectation is that he'll maintain this streak without deviating. Though President Tinubu is a maverick politician who can never be tossed, dictated for or cowed around, the federal character principles impose some restraints. For instance, Section 147(3), which speaks to the need to appoint a minister from each state of the federation, serves one major purpose. It reinforces Section 14(3) in terms of ensuring that the federal character of Nigeria is reflected in the appointment of ministers. Accordingly, it enjoins the president to ensure that a minister is appointed from each state of the federation.

As excellent as the foregoing constitutional provision is, the president must however ensure that his templates for selecting those to work with as ministers and other cabinet members are not lowered. As expected, Since February when Tinubu was declared winner of the presidential election, political jobbers have gone to town, peddling names of those who are best suited to be appointed as ministers and officials of the new government. Now that Tinubu has taken office, these scavengers have intensified their nefarious activities of misleading the government, while lobbying for former government officials with questionable characters to be appointed ministers of head of key government agencies.

Tinubu cannot fall into this trap. He is a leader of no mean experience and pedigree. His administrative acumen is so vast that he knows the implications of appointing or working with those that are ill-equipped and whose reputations are tainted.

For example, one of the names that are been peddled for appointment as minister is a former Managing Director of a federal government revenue yielding agency. She was forced to step aside by President Muhammadu Buhari who appointed her and had defended her all along. But when her can of worms were opened to the former president, he was dazed, perplexed and jaw-dropped that he withdrew his support for her immediately and ordered her to step aside.

It would be an understatement to say former President Buhari regretted her appointment. Is that kind of person fit to return to government when she has shown obvious tendency towards pilferage, incompetence and nepotism? Your answer is as good as mine – certainly not!

Because of gross incompetence and corrupt tendencies, the likes of her do their job with impunity and slack hands. She exudes unimaginable arrogance and disrespected due processes and procedures. In government protocols, agencies under any ministry are answerable to the supervising minister. In her own case, she disregarded her supervising minister, and when corrected or called to order she flaunts her connections in high places.

Tinubu cannot afford to base his appointments on politics and party affiliation because of people like this. The enormity of responsibility on Tinubu's shoulders is beyond politics. It is a national duty that requires open-mindedness and courage. The president should consider the larger picture, rather than party patronage. The buck stops on the president's table. If he fails to deliver, no one will share the blame with him.

President Tinubu understands the harshness of the judgement of history; hence, he will defy the immense pressure some henchmen are mounting on him to appoint half-baked people of questionable public service track records.

Suffice it to highlight some of the breaches of this former public servant in question. She ran the federal government revenue agency like a personal estate. For instance, she concessioned berths 9, 10 and 11, FOT Onne, without recourse to the relevant provisions of the ICRC for the concession of Public Assets. This is gross breach of procedures and processes of government. According to findings, she allegedly excised that berth 9,10, & 11 in Onne from intels Ltd consolidated lease, and leased them out to a company from Philippines (ICTSI Ltd) which she brought into the country.

Without approval from the ICRC, FMT and the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which the president and commander-in-chief presides over, the former MD allegedly created a new terminal without concession. It was a new terminal with direct port calls.

The same pattern was adopted in the outsourcing of the Traffic Management system at Apapa where a unilateral action to swing the award of the contract from a prior qualified contractor to the present one was done without recourse to due process and approval thresholds. The failure to subject these processes to due process and transparent bidding process prevented the federal government from optimising the returns from such transactions as well as value for money.

The agency had long been in the process of appointment of a service provider long before the lady in question assumed office, but she jettisoned the company that was pre-qualified through compliance with the provisions of PPA 2007 and unilaterally picked the current company Truck Transit Park (TTP), whose operations had been widely condemned by truckers and other stakeholders for the introduction of clandestine charges and lack of transparency in its operations.

The (TTP) truck call up concession was allegedly awarded to her childhood friend in Kaduna without the approval of the FMOT, Certificate of no Objection from ICRC and no FEC approval in contravention of the requirement of the law.

The initial preferred bidder (Truckit Limited) was to be given a one-off payment, while subsequent earnings were to the Authority directly. However, the TTP Ltd contract is on revenue sharing which shortchanges the Authority. The TRUCKIT solution was a reliable app and the company appeared to be of good pedigree with a credible track record. This beautiful concept was jettisoned for more expensive concept with its attendant problems.

She assumed office as the head of the agency with a smack of arrogance never seen before. She vehemently undermined the culture of courtesy and camaraderie that existed in the agency to the extent that her office became like sacred room that even a General Manager cannot have access to except on her personal call, no matter how urgent the matter was. This attitude resulted in breach of known procedural channels on several occasions as she sidelined General Managers and other ranking officials in decision making.

Her time as managing director of the agency witnessed the most of abuse of public service procedures, with the appointment of her crony, who she grew up with in Zaria as the general manager (Procurement), with her PA who coordinated the activities of several companies they used for cornering contracts.

Service contracts that were met in 2010 at five years tenure were extended to 10 years tenure to ensure the protection of entrenched interests long after she must have left service. Old competent contractors for stevedoring and cargo survey were all disengaged and replaced by new and inexperienced companies with protection from the MD.

Since the engagement of the JV companies, the agency had remained competitive with complete elimination of outrage of the shipping community over the inadequate channel depths of the past. However, upon realizing that contracts were nearing expiration, rather than engage in fresh negotiations with the companies that have provided world class services and made the ports stay competitive, she advertised the jobs for open bidding and positioned her cronies to take over the jobs that were performing well.

Throughout the entire duration of her tenure as the MD of the agency, she was replete with official recklessness fueled by her purported closeness with the President. This access emboldened her to take actions in outright circumvention of official channels of communication and disregard for Public Service Pules (PSR). These acts were manifest in emergency procurement of official vehicles to the tune of over N1.2billion, direct communication for procurement waivers on expenditure above the Authority’s thresholds which should have been routed through the Ministerial Tenders Board, conclusion of award of contracts requiring FEC and other layers of approval without recourse to such approving authorities, among others.

The new administration of President Bola Tinubu must be given the space to breathe, supported to succeed but not pressured to appoint people of questionable character, who will only be a burden rather than asset to the new government.

Senate Committee To Begin Work On Buhari’s Request For Payment Of Judgement Debts

...The judgement debts incurred by MDA’s are $566.7 million, £98,526.17, N226.2 billion.

The Senate has asked its Committee on Foreign Loans to work on former President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the issuance of promissory notes to settle judgement debts.

However a federal lawmaker, Senator George Sekibo raised a Point of Order, arguing that the 9th Senate cannot pass the request as it is winding down and does not have enough time to do a thorough analysis of the request.

The request was up for consideration during Wednesday’s plenary session which he proposed that the incoming 10th Senate should handle the matter.

The judgement debts incurred by MDA’s are $566.7 million, £98,526.17, N226.2 billion.

The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, who presided over the plenary, however ruled that the Foreign Loans Committee should work on the request and return with a report in one week.

Buhari, who handed over to President Bola Tinubu on May 29, had written to the National Assembly requesting the resolution of parliament to settle priority judgement debts incurred by federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) through the issuance of promissory notes.

Buhari had said the Federal Executive Council on March 29, 2023 approved the liquidation of top priority judgement debts by the MDA’s through the issuance of promissory notes which will be redeemed over time through budgetary provisions.

CNG slams OPC, Afenifere over comments on North

By  Blessing Otobong-Gabriel

The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG has slammed the Oduwa Peoples Congress, OPC and Afenifere over provocative statements to the North, that it said tends to threaten the North against demanding what is due to it from the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Addressing newsmen on sunday in Abuja, CNG’s spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said the two groups have no right to speak against the North, adding that Tinubu got bulk of his winning votes from the North.

He said, “For the OPC and all other merchants of mindless threats and hate campaigns, we say, the North is neither afraid nor apprehensive of their designs and we will remain resolute in protecting our legacy and inherited responsibility to all northerners.

“The OPC and all those who have no other useful vocation other than attacking northerners under the slightest of pretexts, should know that the North’s reticence in speaking out or taking action is not born of fear or ignorance of how to respond in kind.

“Henceforth, we deem any further attempt at targeting of any northerner, anywhere, for vilification, systematic dehumanization, profiling, alienation or any action that will render them object of attack and persecution, abhorrent to our sensibilities and ordinary decency and therefore unacceptable.

“The North shall henceforth respond to any provocation coin for coin and we dare say: Shege Ka Fasa for those who have ears to hear.”

Suleiman cautioned Tinubu to be wary of the the two groups; OPC and Afenifere, reminding him that the North, particularly the Northwest were instrumental in making him the President-elect.

According to him, “We therefore caution the incoming President to be wary of the way he relates with proliferated regional jingoist associations like OPC and the Afenifere, lest they drag him into an unnecessary misunderstanding with other sections of the country by pretending to be his kith and kin.

“It is no longer news that neither Afenifere nor OPC played any role in bringing about Tinubu's presidency. What is clear however, is that they both expressly and impliedly opposed his bid for the presidency right from the primary to the secondary stages of the race.”
