The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has been impeached from office.

Following the impeachment in a letter signed by seven Councillors and Oshionogue, the Vice Chairman of the local government, Hon. Ayodele Fatimbi, was immediately sworn in as the new Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The swearing-in marks a change in the leadership of the council, as Hon. Fatimbi assumes responsibility for the administration of the local government.

However, the impeachment did not go down well with some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area including the Chairman. Local Government Service Commission, Hon Kabiru Adjoto.

The Edo North Senatorial Leader of the party, Hon Anselm Agbabi confirmed that State Working Committee (SWC) of the APC has called a stakeholders meeting for Saturday while some party leaders in the area are also calling for a separate meeting to resolve the issues.

He was impeached few hours after lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly failed to hold a peace meeting with him and the seven Councillors.

It was gathered the Chairman was removed following attempts by three of the Councillors that did not attend the meeting to suspend the seven councilors.

It was learnt that the seven Councillors rushed to Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo local government, and issued the impeachment letter.

The letter of impeachment reads, "We, the undersigned members of Akoko Edo Local Government Area Legislative Arm hereby impeach you as the acting Local Government Council Chairman with effect from today the 28th January, 2026.

"This decision is as a result of your abuse of office, high handedness, embezzlements of Council funds, Anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery and constant disobedient to constituted authorities".

Oshionogue denied any wrong doing as he said there are on going projects in each of the ten wards of the area.
