Art Minister Musawa Mourns Passing of Nollywood Legend Olu Jacobs at 84

The Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy mourns the passing of Nigeria's legendary actor and cultural icon, Sir Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, MFR, who died on Wednesday, 16th September 2026, at the age of 84.
 Nneka Ikem Anibeze, Ph.D SA Media & Publicity to the Minister, Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy in a statement said reacting to the sad news, the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, Esq., described his death as a monumental loss to the nation and the entire creative industry.

 “Olu Jacobs was not just an actor, he was a national institution. He was one of the most important pillars of Nigeria's entertainment industry and one of Africa's greatest actors. For over five decades, his voice, his presence and his craft gave life to our stories and gave dignity to our industry”.

“Through the Lufodo Academy which has trained hundreds of actors, directors and filmmakers who are now leading Nollywood, and the countless lives he touched, his legacy will continue to live on stage, on screen and in the hearts of millions of Nigerians. Nigeria has lost a Lion, but his light will never fade.”, Musawa stated.

On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the entire creative community, the Ministry also extends heartfelt condolences to Dame Joke Silva, his children, and other family members.

2Baba Reflects on Past Regrets


Veteran Afrobeats star Innocent Idibia, widely known as 2Baba, has opened up about regrets from earlier stages of his life and career.


Speaking during a recent appearance on the Mic On podcast, the award-winning singer admitted that he made several missteps over the years, both professionally and personally. He noted that, looking back, there are decisions he wishes he had handled differently.


According to the music icon, moments of pressure and emotional strain often influenced his choices. “There are many things I wish I could go back and fix,” he said, adding that being human sometimes means making mistakes when situations become overwhelming.

Tyla Beats Davido and Other African Stars to Win Second Grammy

South African singer Tyla has made history again, winning her second Grammy at just 24. She took home the Best African Music Performance award for her hit Push 2 Start, beating out some of Africa’s biggest names, including Nigerian superstar Davido, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo.

Tyla first won the same category in 2024 with her global sensation Water, making her one of Africa’s fastest-rising musical talents. After the ceremony in Los Angeles, she expressed her excitement:
 “This is insane, this is so insane! I'm just so lucky to be here and I'm so proud to be African. I'm excited to see more of us over here.”

Fans quickly took to social media to celebrate, with one X user posting, “South Africa is proud of you! We are proud of you!” Another added that while they had hoped Ayra Starr or even Davido might win, Tyla’s hard work deserved recognition: “You deserve it.”

Love – Burna Boy
With You – Davido featuring Omah Lay
Hope & Love – Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin
Gimme Dat – Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid
Push 2 Start – Tyla
While Davido and other Nigerian stars dominated international charts, none clinched a Grammy this year. 

Burna Boy and Senegalese legend Youssou N'Dour were also nominated in the Best Global Music Album category, and Beninese icon Angelique Kidjo in Best Global Music Performance, but the coveted gramophone went to others.

However, Nigeria still had a reason to celebrate, as Fela Kuti received the Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his enduring influence on global music.

South Africa also had a proud night beyond music, with comedian Trevor Noah hosting the main ceremony for the sixth year in a row.
