The Anambra State Government has directed traders at the Onitsha Main Market to return to their businesses starting Monday, following the expiration of the one-week market shutdown earlier ordered by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, who confirmed that the temporary closure has officially ended and normal commercial activities should immediately resume across the state’s largest trading hub.
According to the government, there is no longer any form of sit-at-home restriction affecting Mondays in Anambra, and traders are expected to open their shops without hesitation.
“This is to inform the general public that the closure of Onitsha Main Market, ordered by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, lapses this weekend,” Mefor said.
“All traders are hereby informed to resume business as usual on Monday.”
He assured residents and business owners that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to guarantee safety within the market and surrounding areas.
He encouraged anyone with concerns to contact the state emergency response line, 5111.
The commissioner also reiterated that the state’s pro-rata salary policy remains in effect. Under the directive, civil servants and teachers who fail to report to work on Mondays will not receive payment for the day.
Parents were equally advised to ensure their children attend school regularly, warning that non-compliance could attract sanctions.
The state government maintained that restoring full business and academic activities on Mondays is necessary to strengthen economic productivity and maintain normalcy across Anambra.
