The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has directed all primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to fully comply with the ongoing strike action initiated by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

The directive was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the NUT Chairman, Abdullahi Shafas; the State Secretary, Margaret Jethro; and issued by the Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.

Although the union acknowledged its initial reservations over the organisational approach adopted by the JUAC, it noted that the intervention of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) made it imperative for all affiliate unions to present a united front.

“All teachers in FCT primary and secondary schools are to stay away from classrooms starting Monday,” the communiqué stated.

It further directed teachers within the city centre and surrounding areas to converge at the National Industrial Court (NIC) on Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Abuja, by 7:00 a.m. on Monday, to demonstrate solidarity during the hearing of a court case instituted against JUAC.

The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to sustained engagement with relevant authorities until all outstanding demands affecting teachers are fully addressed.

“In pursuit of justice and to demonstrate our collective resolve, we must stand together. A people united can never be defeated,” the union declared.

Members were urged to remain steadfast, with assurances that updates would be communicated as developments unfold.

The strike action follows the commencement of an indefinite industrial action by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on January 19 over unresolved welfare and labour-related concerns.
