The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has joined the ongoing strike action by workers under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), intensifying industrial unrest in the nation’s capital.
While the strike began yesterday, NULGE members withdrew their services starting today, signaling growing pressure on the administration of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The union’s decision was announced in a communiqué jointly signed by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Kabi, President of NULGE FCT Chapter, and Comrade Sa’ad Abdulmumini, State Secretary.
The announcement followed an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting convened on Monday to assess the strike and related issues affecting Area Council staff across the FCT.
According to the communiqué, NULGE members will fully participate in the strike while also pressing for resolution of pending demands with the Minister of the FCT and the ministerial committee. Union leaders urged members to remain united and committed until their grievances are fully addressed.
The strike has already disrupted key services in FCTA offices, with security personnel deployed to control access amid widespread absences.
The ongoing industrial action coincides with proceedings at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Abuja Division, where the FCT Minister and the FCTA are seeking a court injunction to restrain JUAC officials from continuing the strike.
While FCTA management claims that many workers’ demands have been met, the unions maintain that several core issues — including unpaid entitlements and welfare concerns — remain unresolved.
