The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over the low voter registration turnout in Yobe State during the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, INEC National Resident Commissioner for Yobe State, made this known at a press briefing in Damaturu. He revealed that a significant strategy shift is underway to improve participation, with registration units being moved directly to local wards to make the process more accessible.
During the first phase of the voter registration, which concluded on December 21, 2025, Yobe recorded a preliminary total of 55,070 new registrants across 17 local government areas. Abdullahi attributed the low turnout to challenges such as seasonal farming, insecurity, and difficult terrain.
To address these challenges, INEC has approved a 50-day ward-level rotation for voter registration devices, allowing the exercise to reach all eligible citizens at their local communities. The ward-level rotation of INEC Voter Enrollment Devices (IVEDs) is set to commence on February 2, 2026, with the final week of registration taking place at Local Government offices across the state.
The Resident Commissioner urged eligible citizens to take advantage of the expanded registration drive, emphasizing that participation will ensure their right to vote in the 2027 general elections and future polls. He also called on traditional leaders, civil society groups, and media organizations to actively mobilize residents to register during this second phase.
By decentralizing voter registration and engaging local communities, INEC hopes to significantly increase participation and strengthen democratic processes in Yobe State.
