The Governor of Abia State Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR has revealed that the state is now free from frequent power failures caused by national grid collapses, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative to convert organic waste into electricity.

Addressing the media at the State Government House, the governor explained that biogas technology is being used to turn waste products into renewable energy, giving Abians a more reliable and independent power supply.

This move also reduces the state’s reliance on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The governor confirmed that the plan has been agreed upon with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which oversees electricity distribution in Abia. “Instead of throwing away waste, we can turn it into clean energy.

This will particularly benefit the Umuahia in-farms,” he stated.
He added that the state is raising funds to finalize the arrangement with EEDC. As of December 24, the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority officially took over power regulation from NERC, meaning that all generation, transmission, and distribution will now be locally managed.

“The objective is to ensure efficiency and independence in power supply, similar to Aba Power’s model. During recent national grid collapses, Abia State was not affected because much of our power infrastructure is under state control,” the governor said.

With this innovative waste-to-energy program, Abia State is set to become a model for renewable energy in Nigeria, combining sustainability with reliable electricity for residents.
