The United States is stepping up military support and intelligence cooperation with Nigeria as part of an intensified campaign against Islamic State-linked militants in Africa, a top US general said.

Lieutenant General John Brennan, deputy commander of United States Africa Command (Africom) since April 2024, confirmed the increased materiel deliveries and intelligence sharing during an interview with AFP.

The move is part of a broader US strategy to strengthen partnerships with African militaries in the fight against jihadist violence.

“The Pentagon is also maintaining open communication channels with the militaries in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali,” Brennan said, referring to the junta-led countries in the Sahel region.

The intensified engagement with Abuja follows diplomatic pressure from Washington on Nigeria over rising jihadist attacks, while reflecting a more aggressive US posture in targeting IS-linked groups across the continent.
