Vice President Kashim Shettima has described the decision of Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) as both emotional and significant for the political landscape of the North East.

Speaking in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, during a grand reception held to formally welcome the governor into the ruling party, Shettima said the defection strengthens the APC’s presence in the region and signals growing confidence in the party’s leadership.

According to the Vice President, the development brings more North East governors under the APC umbrella, a move he said reflects increasing support for the party’s policies and direction. He also expressed hope that the governors of Adamawa and Bauchi states would eventually reassess their political alignment and consider joining the ruling party.

Shettima officially presented Kefas as the new leader of the APC in Taraba State and urged party members to unite behind him. He noted that strong internal support would enable the governor to deepen peace, stability, and development efforts across the state.

In his remarks, Governor Kefas said his decision to defect, alongside members of his cabinet, lawmakers at both federal and state levels, and several local government officials, was motivated by the need to reposition Taraba for sustainable growth rather than personal political gain.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a visionary and transformational leader whose Renewed Hope agenda aligns with Taraba’s development goals. The governor said joining the APC would open new opportunities for collaboration with the federal government and accelerate progress in the state.

Kefas assured residents that his administration remains committed to people-focused governance, promising visible projects and improvements in key sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development.

Also addressing the gathering, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, described the governor’s defection as a strategic decision taken in the best interest of Taraba citizens. He said the state has enormous potential and that alignment with the ruling party would usher in a new era of growth and revitalisation.

Yilwatda further called on governors still under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reconsider their positions and join what he termed the progressive movement for national development.
The reception attracted party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters from across the state, marking a new chapter in Taraba’s political journey under the APC.
