The Nigerian Senate, through its Committee on Appropriations, has tentatively scheduled March 17, 2026, for the final consideration and passage of the ₦58.472 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill.
This decision followed a special session where the committee approved February 2 to 13, 2026, for in-depth examination of budget estimates at the committee level. Additionally, a public hearing on the budget proposal is set for Monday, February 9, 2026, providing a platform for stakeholders to contribute their views.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, also revealed that Thursday, March 5, 2026, has been earmarked for an interactive session between committee members and key economic managers of the Federal Government.
Attending will be the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu.
The committee further scheduled February 16 to 23, 2026, for the submission of reports on budget defence by various standing committee chairmen. These reports will precede the presentation of the Appropriations Committee’s report to the Senate on March 17.
Senator Adeola noted that while the Senate initially aimed to pass the budget by March 12, he successfully lobbied for an additional week to ensure thorough scrutiny. To facilitate a detailed review, hard copies of the 2026 budget estimates have been printed and distributed to all Senate committee chairmen and members.
This timeline reflects the Senate’s commitment to a meticulous review of the nation’s budget, ensuring that the 2026 Appropriation Bill aligns with Nigeria’s economic priorities.
