Yusuf Kofarmata, Kano state commissioner for science, technology and innovation, has resigned his appointment, citing concerns over what he described as a departure from the ideals that brought the current government to power.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Kofarmata said he could no longer continue under an administration that had “derailed from the ideology that brought it to power,” stressing that his decision was taken in good faith.

Kofarmata, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), resigned just days after Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, formally announced his exit from the party.

Yusuf attributed his resignation to deepening internal crises and prolonged leadership disputes within the NNPP.

His departure was followed by a mass exodus from the party in the state, including 21 members of the Kano state house of assembly, eight members of the house of representatives, and all 44 local government area chairmen.

The political realignment has fueled speculation about a possible move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In December, supporters of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano governor and national leader of the NNPP, operating under the Kwankwasiyya movement, hinted at a possible defection to the APC to improve Kwankwaso’s chances in a future presidential bid.

Abdullahi Rogo, director general of the protocol directorate at the Kano state government house, said the planned defection was in the best interest of the state.

He added that the group had appealed to both Yusuf and Kwankwaso to lead them into the ruling party.

The political developments gathered momentum after Yusuf met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House on January 19. Four days later, on January 23, the governor officially resigned from the NNPP.
