The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has emphasized the importance of empowering women to take on leadership positions.

The FCT- TUC women commission Chairperson, Sandra Nnenna Ogbonna made this disclosure at the 2nd edition FCT TUC women commission annual summit 2024 with the empowering women to leadership roles: taking advantage of the shattered Glass Ceiling in Abuja.

She reaffirms FCT TUC dedication to empowering women, recognizing their critical role in shaping the future.

According to her, empowering women is crucial for national growth. We must create opportunities for women to lead.

FCT- TUC women commission Chairperson informed that the summit is not just a platform to celebrate past successes; it is a call to action. It is time to leverage the broken barriers before us and push further for equality.

"We must advocate for policies that ensure equal opportunities for women, challenge discriminatory practices, and fight for a world where women's voices are not only heard but are central to decision-making".

She urged women to embrace their power and uplift one another. Share their stories, foster connections, and support the next generation of leaders. "We must ensure that young women have the tools, confidence, and opportunities to succeed, and we must continue advocating for education and economic empowerment for women.

"Let us also remember that empowerment goes beyond individual success. It is about lifting each other up, breaking stereotypes, and creating a world where women are not confined by societal expectations. We must challenge the status quo and push for systemic change".

In the same vein, the Secretary, TUC FCT Women Commission, emphasized the importance of women's empowerment for national development, saying despite seeking 35% representation in the National Assembly and House of Representatives, only four women currently hold positions.

She noted that empowering women is crucial for national growth. Collective effort from government, organizations, and individuals is necessary to achieve gender equality. Women must take initiative, build capacity, and support one another to succeed.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Chairperson, FCT- TUC Council, Audu Paul Akogwu hinted that celebrating the second edition of women's service is a significant milestone, saying that the goal of empowering women to take their rightful positions in governance, from their homes to national leadership, is truly inspiring. "By supporting women's empowerment, we can bring about lasting change in Nigeria".

He laments that women in Nigeria face numerous challenges, including limited access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, adding that by addressing these inequalities, we can create a more inclusive society where women thrive.

He acknowledged that empowering women is crucial for Nigeria's growth and development. "As women take on leadership roles and contribute to the economy, we can expect positive changes in governance, education, and healthcare. Let's continue to support and celebrate women's achievements, paving the way for a brighter future".

The special guest of honor, Engr Festus Osifo who was represented by the acting secretary and National President, TUC, Kenneth Mokwenye said this year's focus on empowerment is critical because, as the saying goes, 'if you say you can't, then you can't.' This summit serves as a motivational platform for women to encourage and advocate for themselves.

"Many women face obstacles, but through empowerment, we can overcome these challenges. By empowering women, we unlock their potential, promoting gender equality and inclusive growth. Let's work together to break down barriers and create a brighter future, he said"
