FGN Flags Off Transmission Project To Boost Power Supply In Akwa Ibom

Pursuant to the grid capacity target of 25,000 mega watts,MWs, of electricity by 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has flagged off the construction of a transmission project aimed to improve power supply at Ididep, Ibiono Local Government Area and environs in Akwa Ibom State.

Minister of State for Power, Prince Goddy Jedy-Agba, on behalf of the government flagged off construction of a 2 x 30/40MVA, 123/33kv substation with 6 feeders projected to be completed in 18 months, counting from the date of approval by President Muhammadu Buhari, a statement from the ministry's Media and Public Relations directory, signed by Margaret Oyinboade, said.

The Minister noted that the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria,TCN, had to embark on the construction of the transmission substation project to further strengthen the national grid, improve service delivery and increase capacity to supply power to the people of Akwa Ibom State, adding that upon completion it will increase the wheeling capacity of the national grid to 25,000MW by 2025 as being targeted for the sector.

He told the gathering that the project was in fulfilment of President Buhari's campaign promise to the people of Akwa Ibom State.

The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Emmanuel Udom, represented by the Commissioner for Power and Petroleum, Dr James John Etim, thanked the federal government for bringing the project to Akwa Ibom State, promising to give the necessary support in the execution of the project. 

Earlier, Senator Ita Enang, and the paramount chief of Ididep Ibiono, HRM Okuku, Dr Ime Udo Usoro, during their remarks appreciated President Buhari, the Ministers and Management of the Ministry of Power, the community heads and people of Akwa Ibom State for their cooperation.

Stating that he is interested in projects that impact positively on the people's lives, Senator Enang promised to work with the state government to ensure the successful completion of the project.

TCN Director Engr Nosike Emmanuel appreciated the people for attending the groundbreaking ceremony and urged the government and people of the State to provide all necessary supports and assistance to make the project a reality.
