West African Action Network on Small Arms and Light Weapons in Africa, WAANSA, Nigeria has urged the National Security Advisor, NSA, Major-General Babagana Mungono (rtd) and former vice president and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to ensure that the national certificate scholarship for 500 people in Internally Displaced Peoples, IDP, camp is achieved.
Others whose support were solicited for are Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers and Babagana Zulum of Borno States, Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Comrade Ladi Bala, including other Nigerians and international organisations.
These eminent Nigerians and international organisations were urged to rally support for Grand Plus College of Education, Ilorin, Kwara State, which is at the forefront of the objective.
The organisation made the appeal during a press briefing when the management of Grand Plus College of Education visited WAANSA Nigeria recently to initiate the National Certificate in Education, NCE, scholarship for IDPs in Abuja, as part of the programmes to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence in Nigeria.
WAANSA assured of its readiness to work closely with the management of the college of education to ensure that the scholarship is achieved.
President of WAANSA, Temitope Lamidi, who was represented by Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Martin Igwe and a board member representing Gender WAASSA Nigeria, Blessing Alile, agreed on the urgency of taking education to the vulnerable at IDP camps.
WAANSA Nigeria appreciated the leadership of NAWOJ led by Comrade Bala towards winning the war against gender violence through education.
“Nigerians must not continue to observe days against gender violence without proactive measures to stop the social menace.
“Educating victims of conflict and internally displaced persons remain a great move by Grand Plus College of Education, Ilorin, which must be supported by well-meaning Nigerians and all presidential aspirants in the 2023 elections who signed for peace.
“Prolonging the stay of victims in IDP camps remains a source of instability against which we must take action now,” the organisation averred.
